Ashlynn's Baptism Photo Shoot

About one month ago.  Our oldest chose to be baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  In our church we get baptized at age 8.  I'll be talking more about that in a post that I'm writing about her baptism day.

A few weeks before her baptism I took her to a local park in her baptism dress and we did a little photo shoot.

It was super fun to spend some one on one time with her.  And I know that I'm biased, but isn't she just gorgeous?!

I can't believe how fast she is growing up.  It seems like yesterday that I was holding her in my arms.

We are so proud of our girl and can't wait to see what the future holds for her!

Homeschool {the curriculum we use}

I always like to talk with other Homeschool families and see which curriculum that they use and get other ideas.  So, I thought today I would share with you the curriculum that we use.

All families and children are different, these are the things that have worked best for us.

 For Math we use Math-U-See
We love that this curriculum uses audio, visual and kinesthetic learning styles to help the children learn math.  It has really helped my daughter boost her confidence in math.

For Reading and Spelling we use All About Reading and All About Spelling

My daughter had a really tough time learning how to read while she was in public school.  But when we started homeschooling and we started with Level 1 of All About Reading, within one month she excelled and could read!

All About Spelling has helped my daughter just as much with her spelling abilities.  In public school she would not get a single word right on her spelling tests.  It really made her confidence plummet.  We decided to try All About Spelling and she has been getting 100% on every spelling test that I give her.  These are amazing products!

To practice printing we use Handwriting Without Tears
These books are the 2nd Grade books that my daughter has been using this year and we love them.  She is now starting on the Cursive book.

For History we have been using The Story of the World
We have been learning from Volume 1 this year which is about Ancient Times.
We've enjoyed these books as well.
And for Science this past year we have been using Singapore Science
They are 4 workbooks that are designed for 7-8 year old that make learning science fun.
My daughter has really enjoyed them.  We may look for something new next year as she will be in 3rd grade.  But we like these books as well.

What curriculum do you use?

Our Favorite Birthday Traditions

Do you have Birthday traditions with your family that you do every single year?
We have a few things that we do with our children every year on their birthdays that we would like to share with you today!

1. The night before their birthday after they fall asleep, I tape streamers in a zig zag across their bedroom door.  And then blow up balloons and place them behind the streamers.
Then in the morning when they wake up and open their bedroom door, all of the balloons drop!
And then they have to tear their way out of their bedroom!
It's a lot of fun and my kids love it!

2. We also let them choose what they would like for breakfast. They usually choose pancakes or doughnuts.

3.  Another one of our traditions is to tell the birthday boy or girl about the day they were born and what time they were born.  It's fun to reminisce and it's fun for the child to learn about the day that they were born.

4. We let them choose what they would like to eat for dinner and what cake they would like

5.  We do the candles and sings Happy Birthday!

6.  We open presents!

They aren't the most exciting traditions in the world, but our kids look forward to them every year!
Remember it's not how much money your spend, or doing something elaborate, the only thing that your children will remember is how you made them feel on their special day!

Movie Night 8th Birthday Party

The next day for Ashlynn's 8th birthday,
To keep with the theme of simple birthdays this year,
she decided to invite two of her best friends to go to the movies with her.

NOTE:  Be prepared for lots of pictures.  Hey I warned ya!

The Lego Movie was the only kids movie out at the time, so we went with that one.
It was a pretty good movie, and the kids all loved it!

The girls all took a picture with The Lego Movie cardboard thingy.

And then we came back home for pizza and fruit for dinner.

It was so funny that both of the girls brought the same gift bags.  I had to document that one!

We sang happy birthday, blew out the candles and ate the delicious cake from Albertsons.

We all had a fantastic time and I think that
Ashlynn enjoyed having two special friends with her on her special day.

Park Birthday Party

The twins birthday was just a little over a month ago and I'm just getting around to sharing what we did this year for their birthday.  This year I decided to do simple birthday parties.  For their 5th birthday we decided to have pizza, fruit and other snacks at the park, and just let them play and have fun!

The boys and their friends all loved it and had a great time. And the best part of it was that I didn't have to clean up the mess that would have happened at my house afterwards!

We ordered a Spiderman cake from Albertsons, the boys favorite super hero right now!

We kept it simple and the kids loved it just as much as those past birthday parties where I spent hours making decorations and the cake and everything else!  I think I'll be sticking with the simple birthday parties from now on!
