{Multiples Monday} My Experience Nursing Twins

When I was pregnant with the twins everyone told me that you can breastfeed them at the same time. I thought, "This is going to be easy." "So, after I gave birth I just figured that I would have enough milk to provide for both of them. I was strictly breastfeeding them, constantly. Because of the way I am built, I was physically not able to breastfeed them both at the same time. So, I would be feeding one baby and the other one would be crying. And then I would switch and the other one would be crying.

After two weeks of strictly breastfeeing, my family and the doctors were noticing that the babies were not gaining any weight. So, we (myself and the doctor) realized that my body wasn't making enough milk for both of the babies.

We started feeding the twins formula and I would pump as much as I could. They both gained a pound in one week after starting them on formula. After 3 months of pumping we went to just formula. I felt so bad that I was "starving" my children, but I had no idea that my body wouldn't be able to make enough milk for the both of them.

There are many women that are able to breastfeed their twins, unfortunately I was not. I was happy that I tried though.

I would love to hear other women's experiences with breatfeeding one baby or multiples. Please share your experiences.

And if you have any topics that you would like to discuss about multiples, please leave a comment or email me at

  1. I so wanted to be able to breastfeed both my kids (2 single births) but with DS I have a ovarian cyst so large that my body never acknowledged that I gave birth so my milk never came in. And with DD she was always so interested on what was going on around her she would never latch properly. She was always moving her head around. But I would rather that they got formula then nothing and I don't think that we missed anything in the bonding Dept.

  2. I have 3 month old twins...Since they were about 2 days old I've done both. I alternate who I nurse and who gets the formula so they are each getting some of both everyday. So far, they are thriving. I knew while pregnant, that I'd have to supplement at some point, so I didn't feel bad about it.
